Outdoor outreach6/21/2023 She’s watched as kids squished their toes in the sand while the ocean waves hit them for the first time. “What struck me when I first came on was that some of these kids have lived here all their lives, they’re only 15 to 20 minutes away from the ocean, but they’d never been.” “It’s like we’re introducing them to their own backyard,” said Sunny Chang, youth programs manager. In a survey, many reported that their experiences improved their self-confidence in achieving goals, as well as their understanding of how their actions impact the environment and their overall enjoyment of being outdoors. Youth who participated in Outdoor Outreach’s programs last year generally agree. “These have really been transformative opportunities to allow youth to develop confidence and leadership that really transcend even beyond just outdoor experiences.” “What the grants will do is really lay the foundation for consistent programming and build on the programming that we’ve been doing since our founding in these two communities,” said Associate Executive Director Lesford Duncan. These outings include weekend, summer and after-school day trips across the county, from beaches and state parks to nature reserves and wildlife refuges, along with overnight camping and multi-day backpacking expeditions across Southern California’s wilderness.
